Astrophotography combines two of my interests: photography and the night sky. There’s something magical about capturing light that has travelled millions of years to reach the camera sensor.
Getting Started
The journey into astrophotography began with simple star trail shots and has evolved to include more technical deep-sky imaging. Living in Alberta offers some advantages — dark skies aren’t too far away, and the aurora borealis makes regular appearances.
Subjects
Star Trails
Long exposures that capture the apparent rotation of the night sky. A good way to start in astrophotography — all you need is a tripod, a camera that can do long exposures, and patience.
Aurora Borealis
Alberta’s northern latitude means we get aurora displays throughout the year. Capturing them is always exciting — no two displays are ever quite the same.
Deep Sky Objects
Galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters require more specialized equipment but reward with stunning images of objects millions of light-years away.
The Moon and Planets
Closer subjects that can produce impressive results even with modest equipment.
